How the HSC works in NSW
The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the credential awarded to students who complete Year 12 in New South Wales. It involves external examinations set and marked by NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) across all subjects studied in Years 11 and 12.
HSC marks and the ATAR
Your ATAR is not calculated directly from your HSC marks. Instead, NESA calculates an Assessment Mark for each subject (combining school assessments and external exam performance), which is then scaled and combined with marks from your other subjects to produce a final ATAR.
You need to study a minimum of 10 units across at least 6 subjects, including at least 6 units of Board Developed Courses. English is compulsory.
Understanding scaling in NSW
Scaling in NSW works similarly to Victoria — subjects taken by higher-achieving students tend to scale up. Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, Physics, and Chemistry typically scale well. Students should not choose Extension subjects purely for scaling if they find the content significantly harder.
The most effective HSC revision approach
Past papers are the single most valuable resource for HSC preparation. NESA publishes past HSC papers and sample answers for every subject. Working through five to ten past papers for each subject under exam conditions, then reviewing the sample answers and marking guidelines, is the revision approach that correlates most strongly with high band 6 results.
Time management within exams is a specific skill that only develops through timed practice — many students who know the content still lose marks because they spend too long on early questions.
