What NAPLAN actually tests
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is sat by all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It tests four domains: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and Numeracy.
NAPLAN moved to an adaptive online format in 2023. The test adjusts difficulty based on a student's responses — this means two students sitting the same NAPLAN will see different questions, but scores are calculated on the same national scale.
How NAPLAN results work
Results are reported on a national scale from 0 to 1,000. The national average for Year 3 is around 400; for Year 9 it is around 580. Results are also reported against national minimum standards — these are the baseline levels students are expected to achieve at each year level.
NAPLAN results are used for school improvement planning and can influence entry to some selective programs, but they are not used for university entry or Year 12 results.
Preparing without over-pressuring
NAPLAN is designed to assess what students have already learned through normal schooling — it should not require intensive preparation. The most effective preparation is:
Ensuring students are familiar with the online test format and how to navigate it. Practising timed Reading and Numeracy questions so the pace of a timed test doesn't cause anxiety. Reviewing common grammar and spelling rules for the Language Conventions section.
Over-preparing — doing hours of NAPLAN practice per week for months in advance — is counterproductive and creates test anxiety that depresses performance.
What NAPLAN results tell you
NAPLAN results are most useful as a diagnostic tool. If your child scores significantly below the national average in one domain, this points to a specific area for targeted support — not remediation of everything at once.
