What is selective entry and why does it matter?
Selective high schools in Australia are government schools that select students based on academic merit. They typically produce some of the state's strongest ATAR results and have cultures of high academic expectation. Entry is competitive — many schools receive far more applications than places available.
How each state's test works
**New South Wales** — The Selective High School Placement Test is sat in the second term of Year 6. It covers Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills, and Writing. NSW uses a standardised score that accounts for age, so a student sitting the test at the end of Year 6 is not disadvantaged compared to one sitting it earlier.
**Victoria** — The Victorian Selective Entry Exam is sat in July of Year 9 for Year 10 entry. It covers Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Mathematics, Reading, and Writing. Victoria's selective schools include Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson Girls, Nossal, and Suzanne Cory.
**Queensland** — Queensland's academically selective programs (including the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology) have their own entry processes that vary by school and typically include academic testing and interviews.
When to start preparing
For Year 6 selective entry tests (NSW, WA, SA), most education specialists recommend starting structured preparation 12–18 months before the test date — typically Year 4 or early Year 5. For Victoria's Year 9 tests, starting in Year 7 or Year 8 is appropriate.
What preparation actually improves scores
Speed and pattern recognition are the most trainable skills for selective entry. Students who complete many timed practice tests under realistic conditions improve significantly over students who do untimed practice at their own pace. Reviewing every wrong answer with an explanation is more important than completing more tests.
